The Lake Lure Monster, named "Lessie" by locals, falls into the same cryptid category as Tessie and the famous Nessie (Loch Ness Monster). Said to resemble a plesiosaurus, a large large marine sauropterygian reptile that lived during the early years of the Jurassic period, theories abound as to how Lessie came to reside in the depths of Lake Lure. Following hurricane Isidore in September 2002, sightings of Lessie stopped altogether, and it was rumored that the monster had either passed away or somehow moved on to another location. However, photos emerged during the Lake Lure fires in 2016 that led many to believe the underwater creature is still alive and well!
