In 1962, NASA established the Rosman Satellite Tracking Station in the Pisgah National Forest. Thought to be a front for top-secret government dealings, a vast series of underground tunnels were dug out to host various experiments. In digging this subterranean network, it's said that workers came across numerous "little devils" that would hinder digging and on at least one occasion, killed a worker using a "crude tool". Shortly after, NASA shut down the operation, sealed the tunnels, and handed the property over to the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute for which it is still used today.
